GSA Travel Guidelines & Policies

Green Soccer Association (GSA) Travel Coaches
Basic Guidelines, Standards, and Policies (Updated)
This document outlines the core guidelines, expectations, and organizational policies for GSA Travel Coaches. These policies, approved by the GSA Board, are designed to promote consistency, structure, and professionalism across all teams. They also provide coaches with a clear framework when addressing parent questions regarding playing time, positions, or other season-related matters.

Coaches are expected to understand and adhere to all policies outlined below.

General Policies – Travel Program

Playing Time
Playing time is often the most discussed issue among parents and one of the most challenging aspects of coaching. GSA has evolved from a recreational travel organization into a highly competitive program focused on preparing players for long-term success, including high school competition. As a result, playing time policies vary by competitive level.

Coaches must clearly communicate expectations to families, particularly at higher competitive levels. Participation at more competitive tiers (e.g., Black level) reflects acceptance of elevated standards, training intensity, and performance expectations.

Important: All players must play. However, fair does not always mean equal, particularly at higher competitive levels.

Black Level Teams (U9–U12)

  • Players must receive a minimum of 33% (1⁄3) of league match minutes.
  • Coaches should use this as a guideline; exact minute calculations are not required.
  • All rostered players must participate.
  • Tournament minimum: 25% of total tournament minutes.
  • Coaches may adjust playing time based on match circumstances.

These ages are critical for development. Players must have opportunities to compete, learn, succeed, and grow through experience.

Orange / White / Gray Level Teams (U9–U12)

  • Players must receive a minimum of 50% of league match minutes.
  • All rostered players must participate.
  • Tournament minimum: 25% of total tournament minutes.
At this level, development and enjoyment are priorities. Excessive bench time at young ages is counterproductive to fostering long-term passion and growth.

Black Level Teams (U13–High School)

  • Players must receive a minimum of 25% of league match minutes.
  • All players must participate; however, playing time will not be equal.
  • Tournament minimum: 25% of total tournament minutes.
At this stage, competition intensifies and mirrors high school expectations, where performance increasingly influences playing time. This structure prepares players for a merit-based environment.

Orange / White / Gray Level Teams (U13–High School)

  • Players must receive a minimum of 50% of league match minutes.
  • Tournament minimum: 25% of total tournament minutes.
While expectations increase with age, this level maintains a balanced focus on development, competition, and enjoyment.

24-Hour Rule
To promote professionalism and constructive communication, GSA enforces a 24 hour rule:

  • Parents must wait 24 hours after a game before discussing playing time or game-related
    concerns.
  • Post-game discussions are not permitted.
Coaches should kindly remind families of this policy and schedule conversations once emotions have settled and thoughtful dialogue can occur.

Parent Conduct
Parents are expected to demonstrate positive sportsmanship toward coaches, players, officials, and opponents.

  • Sideline coaching is not permitted.
  • Negative comments toward players or referees are unacceptable.
  • Parents represent GSA and must model appropriate behavior.

If a parent fails to meet these expectations, the issue must be escalated to the appropriate Travel Director, Director of Coaching, and Club President.

Coaches coach. Players play. Parents support.

Player development remains the priority. Tactical growth and skill implementation may not immediately translate into results. Winning is a byproduct of development—not a guarantee.

Guest Player Policy

  • Guest players must come from a GSA travel roster or be eligible Green Local Schools academy players.
  • A guest player may not replace or receive more playing time than an available rostered player.
  • Guest players serve as supplemental support only.

Club Players
GSA supports players who also participate in club soccer. Coaches must:

  • Demonstrate flexibility with scheduling conflicts.
  • Maintain a positive and professional approach.
  • Avoid negative commentary regarding club participation.

These athletes have committed to additional training and competition to enhance their development. Coaches should support that commitment.

Player Position Policy
Early specialization can limit long-term development. Especially at the U9–U12 levels:

  • Players should experience multiple positions.
  • No player should be locked into one position (e.g., goalkeeper) solely for team success.
  • Positional rotation is required.

Playing various positions enhances tactical awareness, skill development, and overall soccer IQ.
